On 15th January, 1915, the 2nd Yorkshire Light Infantry battalion of 13 Brigade, 5th Division left their billets in Chapelle d’Armentières and moved to nearby trenches. On 18th January, the day on which James Saul was killed, enemy snipers and machine-guns were active along the left hand trenches held by the battalion. |
